Young people can be overwhelmed when it comes to finding their way around public transport. Results from previous projects suggest that concrete (digital) strategies for orientation in public transportation have so far been shown as inadequate. In the light of the increasing digitalization of mobility services, "JuMp!" will address this particular problem. The aim of "JuMp!” is to compensate for various barriers of mobility restrictions and incompetence, particularly in suburban areas among socio-economically disadvantaged groups and individuals. In this context, mobility barriers are discussed and addressed in a low-threshold manner within the framework of collaborative workshops and focus groups involving youth centers, schools and mobility providers (e.g., Wiener Linien, ÖBB). Adolescents and young adults aged 15-24 from different social backgrounds will be included as experts in the opinion-forming and evaluation process, with their mobile mediatized lifeworlds being taken seriously.
The project is being carried out as a social science method mix of ethnography, interviews, mobility walks, visual documentation, and psychological framework consulting combined with participatory technology design methods. tbw research GesmbH is acting as consortium lead, with our Department, the company sicher unterwegs – Verkehrspsychologische Untersuchungen GmbH, the Institute of Visual Computing and Human-Centered Technology at the TU Wien and Wiener Linien (Viennese public transport provider) also being part of the project consortium. The project team at the Department of Communication includes Gerit Götzenbrucker as principal investigator, Caroline Strecker and Katharina Schrems as project staff and Michaela Griesbeck as accompanying researcher. The Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG) is providing a total of around € 360.000 for "JuMp!" for a period of 2,5 years, of which around € 130.000 will be allocated to our Department.
