At the Department of Communication, students can work towards a Bachelor or a Master degree in Communication, an English-language Master degree in Communication Science or a doctorate in Social Sciences. The Bachelor program at the University of Vienna lasts for six semesters and is designed to provide academic preparation for a career in the field. The Master program is a further four semesters long and builds on the initial academic work carried out as part of the Bachelor degree, as well as providing students with the opportunity to look at, study and tackle academic questions in greater depth.

The Directorate of Studies is responsible for organizing and administrating the study programs.
The courses provided by the academic staff are supplemented with subject tutorials during the introductory period. These tutorials take the form of exercises relating to the introductory lectures and are held by experienced and appropriately trained students for students.
