QS Rankings 2020: Top ranking for our department

11.03.2020

The Department of Communication is now ranked as the 30th best department in the world.

According to the 2020 "QS World University Rankings by Subject", our department is now ranked as the 30th best institution in the field of "Communication & Media Studies" in the world. Continuing our upward trajectory, we are now five places better placed compared to last year's ranking (2019: 35th; 2018: 44th). For the third year running, we've broken into the Top 50, after being part of the Top 100 for three years from 2015-2017. We first entered the Top 150 ranking in 2014.

The ranking is once again led by the University of Amsterdam (NL) and mainly dominated by communication departments located in the US and UK. Looking only at European universities, we are now excellently-placed as the 7th best ranked department on the continent (2019: 9th), while only the departments of the University of Zurich (18th) and the LMU Munich (25th) are ahead of us in the German-speaking countries.

QS Rankings are based on various indicators mainly related to research, i.e. number of citations, reputation among fellow academics and employers/universities as well as actual visible research output and publications in highly-ranked, international peer-reviewed journals.
