New research project at our department

We recently secured a new research grant, funded by the Federal Ministry of Science, Research and Economy.

The Austrian Federal Ministry of Science, Research and Economy will fund Jörg Matthes's research project "SMART?Phone. Consequences of Smartphone Use in Children's and Adolescents' Everyday Lives" within its current Sparkling Science program.

Starting on September 1, 2017, the project will run for a duration of two years. The project, conducted by Jörg Matthes, Desirée Schmuck & Kathrin Karsay, aims to investigate how and why mobile apps such as WhatsApp and Snapchat dominate children's and adolescents' communication habits and whether the permanent availability can really be considered as "smart". As existing research lacks a comprehensive analysis of the positive and negative effects of smartphone usage on adolescents' and children's development in the long term, the project team aims to fill these pressing research gaps.
